A step forward.

Before we knew it, 5 months had already passed since our meeting with Dr. Paley. It has been a very exhausting period for us. We had to give it our all, but we wouldn’t have made it without you. Fundraising campaigns for Antosia are still ongoing, but the time has come for the first arrangements.

Antosia will ultimately undergo three surgeries in America and will have to stay there for the entire duration of the treatment, which is about 6 months. She faces the following surgeries:

29.10.2013

Reconstruction of the ankle joints, establishing the correct position of the feet, correcting knee valgus, and applying an Ilizarov apparatus for 5-6 months to straighten and lengthen the tibias.

26.11.2013

The first hand surgery, which involves separating the thumb, which is fused to the index finger both osseously and cutaneously. Antosia will have a skin autograft from her groin.

The third surgery will take place after about 5-6 months. During this procedure, the Ilizarov apparatuses will be removed, and the remaining two fingers on her hand, which are fused by skin, will be separated. A skin graft from the groin will also be necessary.

Due to the fact that the hand surgery must be performed in two stages, the cost of the entire treatment will increase to USD 233,000 ~ PLN 745,000. These are enormous amounts, but we are not stopping our efforts. We feel that this is the only right decision and we cannot back down from it. Although in the back of our minds, thoughts of those “easier” solutions still occasionally cross our minds. After all, no one can guarantee the success of these surgeries… You never know…

Once we set the date, we felt we were one step closer. We have already started planning our stay and booking a hotel. Antosia already has her passport photos taken and has even tried fitting into the suitcase ;-). We still have a long way to go, but we feel we will succeed! Stay with us!
